The Social Studies Department provides students with an understanding of social studies skills such as problem solving, analyzing charts and graphs, and evaluating data and using maps; encourages effective communication through written and spoken work in investigating social, political and economic problems; develops in students an understanding of the basic skill and responsibilities of citizenship; and provides students with an opportunity to accumulate knowledge of foreign cultures. The department offers a state-mandated curriculum in grades nine, ten and eleven. Electives in African-American History, Comparative Religions, Criminal Justice, International Studies, Maryland History, Psychology, Sociology, and Women's History are also available. Advanced Placement courses include Comparative Government, Human Geography, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Modern European History, Psychology, United States Government and Politics, United States History, and World History.
